On April 16, 2025, Youths4ClimateJustice held a public lecture at The University of Zambia -UNZA, Lusaka, to discuss the critical intersection of Zambia’s economic growth through the mining sector and environmental sustainability. The event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including youth-led organizations, government departments, academia, environmental justice advocates, and community representatives.

The lecture highlighted the importance of balancing economic growth with environmental protection and community rights. Community voices were at the forefront of the conversation, with students and local representatives sharing their concerns and experiences regarding the impact of mining on their livelihoods and environment. Key points discussed included the need for effective enforcement of existing laws, community-led environmental audits, and youth participation in environmental governance.

As we move forward, it’s imperative that Zambia’s economic ambitions do not come at the expense of ecological integrity and human well-being. We must work together to ensure that the mining sector contributes to inclusive, sustainable, and environmentally responsible development.
