On the 24th of April, 2025 Youths4ClimateJustice held it’s April edition of the Climate cafe on Multimedia storytelling for climate justice at the Global Platform Zambia, aimed at exploring the role that storytelling plays in sending climate message that are impactful and advocate for change.

Y4CJ Communications Lead Autone Mululuma opened the cafe with a introduction to storytelling and why it is important in this age to be authentic, well-researched, have clear messaging and invest in visual and narrative techniques.

Mr. Luckson from Agents of Change Foundation Zambia took us through the opportunities and challenges that lie in environmental reporting in Zambia, highlight some of his experience as a journalist covering environmental stories in Zambia, emphasizing resilience and the appreciation of on-the-ground reporting.

Finally, the team from EnviroCast lead a session on how to leveraging social media for climate justice and environmental awareness. In there presentation they cited a documentary they have produced on the Kabwe Lead pollution and it’s impact of the local community, giving practical ways to use video and audio formats like podcasts to advocate for climate action.

On April 16, 2025, Youths4ClimateJustice held a public lecture at The University of Zambia -UNZA, Lusaka, to discuss the critical intersection of Zambia’s economic growth through the mining sector and environmental sustainability. The event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including youth-led organizations, government departments, academia, environmental justice advocates, and community representatives.

The lecture highlighted the importance of balancing economic growth with environmental protection and community rights. Community voices were at the forefront of the conversation, with students and local representatives sharing their concerns and experiences regarding the impact of mining on their livelihoods and environment. Key points discussed included the need for effective enforcement of existing laws, community-led environmental audits, and youth participation in environmental governance.

As we move forward, it’s imperative that Zambia’s economic ambitions do not come at the expense of ecological integrity and human well-being. We must work together to ensure that the mining sector contributes to inclusive, sustainable, and environmentally responsible development.

In November 2024, Youth4Climate Justice (Y4CJ) convened a high-level post-COP29 dialogue meeting with members of the Zambia Youth Parliamentary Caucus. The consultative session provided a timely and strategic platform for young climate leaders to engage directly with lawmakers on the outcomes of the 29th United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP29) and Zambia’s progress on its climate commitments.

The meeting brought together youth activists, climate policy experts, and members of Parliament to critically analyse the key decisions made during COP29 and assess their implications for Zambia’s climate agenda. The discussion focused on the country’s

Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) Zambia’s official climate action plan under the Paris Agreement which outlines its strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to climate impacts.

Participants used the platform to reflect on whether Zambia’s current policies, investments, and legislative frameworks are aligned with the goals outlined in the NDCs. The dialogue also emphasized the importance of transparency, accountability, and inclusive implementation, especially ensuring that young people, women, and vulnerable communities are meaningfully engaged in climate decision-making.

The parliamentarians expressed appreciation for the continued leadership and pressure from young climate advocates, acknowledging that youth movements like Y4CJ are instrumental in driving policy dialogue and holding duty bearers accountable. They also reaffirmed their commitment to working collaboratively with young people to advance ambitious climate action at both national and local levels. This engagement marked an important step toward bridging the gap between grassroots climate advocacy and parliamentary oversight. By creating a space for reflection and co-creation, the post-COP29 dialogue reaffirmed the shared responsibility of youth and policymakers in pushing Zambia toward a more resilient and climate-just future.

In 2023, with the generous support of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), Youth4Climate Justice (Y4CJ) implemented a grassroots training initiative aimed at strengthening the resilience of small-scale farmers in Choma District, Southern Province. This region was among the hardest hit by the prolonged drought that severely disrupted farming activities, threatening food security and livelihoods.

The training focused on equipping local farmers with the knowledge and practical skills needed to adapt to climate-induced shocks, particularly droughts, which have become more frequent and intense due to climate change. Farmers were trained on disaster preparedness, enabling them to anticipate, plan for, and respond effectively to climate-related emergencies in ways that safeguard both lives and livelihoods.

A core component of the program was the promotion of alternative livelihoods—strategies that diversify income sources and reduce dependence on rain-fed agriculture. Through participatory sessions, the farmers explored options such as climate-smart agriculture, small-scale Agro-processing, beekeeping, and sustainable water harvesting techniques. These alternatives were tailored to local realities and built

on indigenous knowledge, ensuring that the solutions were not only effective but also contextually appropriate.

Beyond technical training, the program fostered community dialogue around resilience building, encouraging collaboration among farmers, local leaders, and youth. It also created a space for knowledge sharing, where participants could exchange experiences and innovative ideas for surviving and thriving in an increasingly unpredictable climate. This initiative reaffirmed Youth4Climate Justice’s commitment to inclusive, locally led climate adaptation. By placing communities at the centre of the response and focusing on practical, forward-looking solutions, the project helped build long-term resilience in Choma and offered a model for similar interventions in other climate-vulnerable regions of Zambia.

In 2022, Youth4Climate Justice (Y4CJ) proudly joined civil society partners in a powerful public demonstration the Climate Justice Walk organized by organizations including the Zambia Climate Change Network (ZCCN), ActionAid Zambia, the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA), and other key environmental stakeholders. The walk was held in response to the escalating climate challenges Zambia was facing, including prolonged droughts, erratic rainfall, and increased environmental degradation.

The Climate Justice Walk served as both a symbolic and practical call to action, bringing together citizens, activists, students, and development partners to raise national awareness on the urgent climate crisis. It also highlighted the disproportionate impact of climate change on marginalized groups, including youth, women, and rural communities whose livelihoods are closely tied to natural resources.

For Y4CJ, participating in the walk was not only about visibility—it was about advocacy. The movement used the platform to push for the long-awaited enactment of the Climate Change Bill, which at the time had remained stalled despite years of consultation and drafting. Youth advocates emphasized the need for a strong legal and institutional framework to guide Zambia’s climate response, enforce environmental regulations, and unlock climate finance.

The walk also spotlighted broader legislative gaps in the environmental sector and called for reforms that reflect the lived realities of Zambians on the frontlines of the climate crisis. Placards, chants, and speeches during the event carried urgent messages on climate justice, environmental rights, and the need for intergenerational equity in policymaking. By taking part in this collective action, Youth4Climate Justice reaffirmed its commitment to grassroots mobilization, inter-organizational solidarity,

and rights-based advocacy. The movement continues to engage in national dialogues and campaigns that aim to hold leaders accountable and ensure that climate policy is inclusive, just, and responsive to the voices of young people.
